چکیده

A difficulty in the classical hydrodynamic analysis of moving contact-line problems, associated with the no-slip wall boundary condition resulting in an unbalanced divergence of the viscous stresses, is reexamined with a smoothed, finite-width interface model. The analysis in the sharp-interface limit shows that the singularity of the viscous stress can be balanced by another singularity of the unbalanced surface stress. The dynamic contact angle is determined by surface tension, viscosity, contact-line velocity and a single non-dimensional parameter reflecting the lengthscale ratio between interface width and the thickness of the first molecule layer at the wall surface. The widely used Navier boundary condition and Cox’s hypothesis are also derived following the same procedure by permitting finite-wall slip.

On the moving contact line singularity: asymptotics of a diffuse-interface model.

The behaviour of a solid-liquid-gas system near the three-phase contact line is considered using a diffuse-interface model with no-slip at the solid and where the fluid phase is specified by a continuous density field. Relaxation of the classical approach of a sharp liquid-gas interface and careful examination of the asymptotic behaviour as the contact line is approached is shown to resolve the...

Boundary conditions in the vicinity of a dynamic contact line: experimental investigation of viscous drops sliding down an inclined plane.

To probe the microscopic balance of forces close to a moving contact line, the boundary conditions around viscous drops sliding down an inclined plane are investigated. At first, the variation of the contact angle as a function of the scale of analysis is discussed. The dynamic contact angle is measured at a scale of 6 mum all around sliding drops for different volumes and speeds. We show that ...

A level-set approach for simulations of flows with multiple moving contact lines with hysteresis

The level-set method of Sussman et al. [J. Comput. Phys. 148 (1999) 81] is extended such that flows with multiple moving contact lines can be simulated, accounting for inertia, a relation between contact-line speed and contact angle, slip and contact-line hysteresis. The convergence properties of the method are investigated, with particular attention on the resolution of the contact-line stress...

Forced Wetting and Hydrodynamic Assist

Introduction It is well known that air entrainment sets the ultimate limit to coating speeds. It is also known that air entrainment can be postponed to higher line speeds by manipulating coating flows to generate what has been termed ‘hydrodynamic assist’ [1]. There is increasing evidence that the benefit is associated with geometric or hydrodynamic confinement of the moving contact line [1-3]....

Rings of Singularities

This paper is a slightly revised version of an introduction into singularity theory corresponding to a series of lectures given at the ``Advanced School and Conference on homological and geometrical methods in representation theory'' at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Miramare - Trieste, Italy, 11-29 January 2010. We show how to associate to a triple of posit...
